IE Arts & Humanities Division appoints Assistant Professor Theodore Lechterman

The IE Arts & Humanities Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Theodore Lechterman as Assistant Professor.

Theodore “Ted” Lechterman is Assistant Professor of Philosophy, having just joined IE from the Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford. His research addresses questions in applied ethics through the lens of political philosophy. Much of his work investigates how democratic values apply when power is exercised by private and artificial agents. Ted’s first book, The Tyranny of Generosity: Why Philanthropy Corrupts Our Politics and How We Can Fix It, was published by Oxford University Press in 2021. He is currently working on various research projects in AI ethics, business ethics, and the ethics of philanthropy. He will teach a new course on the Ethics of Emerging Technologies in the spring.

Ted was trained at Harvard and Princeton and has held previous appointments at the Hertie School, Goethe University, and Stanford University, where he also founded the Philosurfers, a surf club for the philosophically inclined.
